Networking devices needed for an office

$

Hi,

I am in the middle of setting up a business We rented an office space in Toronto. We have settled almost everything. As any company, we need an uninterrupted internet connection.

We are a small group of business analysts and we are starting a business analysis consultancy. None of us have a technical background (We just know how to use business analysis software.) And we don't really have the money to hire someone for all this before we make a profit. So we need to clarify our doubts about setting up about setting up the internet at the new office. We have decided to subscribe to one of the business internet service providers in Canada. They have given us a list of things to buy(including switches, cables etc). And all of it seems to cost a lot.

We don't really know anything about switches and other networking devices. Our total strength is 25. And we don't really how much our internet is going to be, but we are going to use the internet mainly to access business analysis tools online, team collaboration and meetings using Skype.

So can anyone explain about switches and other network devices?. Also please suggest which all network devices we should use?. So that we can compare it to the list the service provider has given us and make sure that we are not overspending?. We are strictly on a budget, that's why?. Please advise. Any help would be appreciated.

2824 won't display some pages

I've bought a second-hand 2824 from a local Ebay seller.

I've changed the switch to Managed, then logged in and added a password to the admin user.

Each time I try to access IP Addressing, Interface Configuration, Lag Membership or RMON Statistics pages, it asks for a user and password.

I then enter "admin" and the password I assigned, but the pages don't display.

What am I doing wrong?

N3024F with Gbit copper SFP not receiving data

We've got a pair of 3024F's stacked and using a mix of fibre and copper sfp's for connectivity. However we've come into a situation a couple of times now where devices connected via copper are not showing that data is being received by either end. Example hardware that we've had issues with include a Dell R630 w/i350's, and also a Cisco router. No matter what we did neither end would show that data was being received. Changing ports on the 3024f stack didn't help nor did changing cables or ports on the attached devices. Moved the SFP's to other Dell kit however (S4810's) and they worked fine - same cables too. Now link is being shown on either end and at the right speed but that's about it. The SFP's were obtained from Dell and show as Dell Qualified. Configuration just specifies the port as a dot1q-tunnel with an access vlan configured which is working fine on other ports with copper sfp's. Packet dumps show frames going out the interfaces but silence on the receive. Thoughts? Regards, William

Hi All,

Actually I have bought 2 N2000 series and now I have bought another one. (So I have 3 now).

I have the stacking cables.

My Question is :
- how do I stacking the 2 switch with 1 new switch? (Best Practice)

- Do I need to shutdown first the 2 switch to deploying stack cable?

- Is there any document to troubleshoot if I fail doing stack?

Please kindly need your help.

Thanks before,

N2048P stack unreachable - ipMapProcessing / osapiArpFlush error

$

Hi,

I have 3 N2048P stacks connected to a central switch with Giga SFP. The 3 stacks have the same config and the same firmware 6.3.2.7
All the 3 links are up without any error on the central switch.

I can connect to 1 stack without error (local account or radius account).

I can connect to the 2nd stack, but with error (local account only, no radius) : 53% ping packets loss.

I can't connect to the 3rd stack : 100% packets loss

My syslog server receive some errors for the 2nd stack and a lot of error for the 3rd :

OSAPI[ipMapProcessing]: osapi_net.c(1381) <num> %% osapiArpFlush: could not get interface Vl1061! errno = 19

(the vlan 1061 is the admin vlan).

What is that error ipMapProcessing / osapiArpFlush: could not get interface Vl1061! errno = 19 ?

Is it a hardware problem : stack ? SFP uplink ? Fiber ?
Is it a configuration problem ?

Thanks for your answers.

Best regards.

Hello,

How do I connect a 1 GbE RJ45 Internet connection into a 40 GbE QSFP port on a Z9000 and/or MXL? I tried a QSFP to SFP+ combined with a SFP+ to RJ45 but that didn't appear to work.

Possible Bug in x1052p switches

$

Hi,

Wondering if anyone else has experiences this;

We have purchased a bunch of x1052p switches and as the GUI interface is sooo slooow,  I wanted to configure them via the export/import function of the config.

So I configured one switch up and then made some changes in a text editor (notepad++)  like the name and the IP address,  usernames etc.. and the imported that to the new switch.

Once the new switch reboots, I can login to the switch with the new user and password and IP address, but all the edit buttons are missing and I am unable to modify any settings via the GUI and even the buttons for the wizards that appear on the dashboard are gone and the save and reboot functions under the gear icon are missing as well. Basically all I can do is look at the switch config and logout.

So therefore the switch is unable to be modified. I can reset to factory defaults, but writing the config back kills the switch again.

Any ideas, or anyone had the same issues trying to configure these switches?

Force10 S50N Basics..

Ok. long story short.  I can manage my way around most stuff. I can google how stuff works and set it up. but I am having issues.

I purchased one of these switches to replace some aging hardware in our warehouse last year.  plus side, the previous companies configuration of it worked 90 percent, so I put it in place with the intentions of resetting it and starting fresh at a later date.

well, that date has come. I reset it to factory defaults, enables some ports with the no shutdown command.  well I plugged in a source, a dsl modem, and I plugged in a computer to another enabled port, and I see not data transfer. there's no automatic ip address assigned, no network connectivity nothing.

I just need to get this thing setup by tomorrow morning before business resumes. I have it here at home with me with a laptop and a serial cable, and the prayers that someone can help me out.  I didn't realize managed switches were so complicated.

I just need to get all 48 ports active and to a point of when I plug something in, it links up to the modem plugged in.   can anyone help me out?

Help with VLANs

I have a DELL PowerConnect 2824.

I am attempting to set up VLANS and use the switch with a router-on-a-stick configuration.

My pfsense router has one NIC with 2 VLANs; VLAN5(WAN) and VLAN55(LAN)

On the DELL 2824 I created 2 VLANS, VLAN5(WAN) and VLAN55(LAN)

VLAN5 has 2 ports 1 and 7. Port 1 is Untagged and port 7 is Tagged. Ports 2,3,4,5,6,and 8 are not used. Ports 1-7 have PVID of 5.

VLAN55 has ports 9-23, all Untagged and port 7 is Tagged. Ports 9-23 have PVID of 55.

I can communicate with the pfsense LAN connection on 7 from any port 2-23.

When I connect my cable modem to port 1 and the pfsense router to port 7 I do not get an IP from DHCP from the cable company.

I'm sure there is some setting on the 2824 I am missing. I can connect everything to a Netgear managed switch withe the same configuration and everything works fine.

Your help would be appreciated.

Dell PowerConnect N2048P Switches 2FA Radius Privileged EXEC mode

We have purchased some N2048P switches and I am in the process of setting them up.  I have setup radius with a 2 factor authentication service that we pay for and the push to my phone works fine and I get logged into the switch.  My questions are:

1) What line of code do I need to use on these switches to put myself in the Privileged EXEC mode when logging in.  I am having to type my local enable password after I get connected.

2) The same for the web interface.  I have added ip http authentication radius local and that of course does a push to my phone for 2 factor authentication but after I get logged in I get a message saying I am in basic mode and it states, "Please note that you are level 1 and do not have configuration privileges.  This session is limited to read only operations."

I have been at this off and on for a few days and can't find the syntax to make this work.  Thanks!

Cannot ping to VLAN interfaces on N4032

Hi there,

I was hoping you could help me figure out an issue. I'm using N4032 stack as a core switch with all the vlans and default gateways configured. I've enabled ip routing on the switch and set the route to the backbone router. So the connection is as follows:

n4032 ---------------- backbone_router
te1/0/19                  ether1

When I ping to the backbone router uplink interface on the switch (interface vlan 20) I am able to get a reply. However if I ping the management interface (interface vlan 280) I get TTL expired in transit message.

Pinging 10.10.20.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.10.20.2: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=63

---------------------------------------------------------------

I tested connecting a PC to te1/0/1 port on the switch setting it to an access vlan 280 and I am able to ping the PC, which indicates that inter-vlan routing is working.

So any ideas as to why I can't ping the vlan interfaces on the switch except for one?

N2048 - DHCP Relay not functioning after outage (help please!)

This switch  has been working great for the past year or so. We had a power outage on the weekend and now dhcp relay is not functioning. I forget all the settings I set to configure it (bad memory) but I am getting this error message in the log, wondering if anyone has any ideas what the problem could be.

WarningAug 8 22:29:35DHCP_SNPDHCP L2 Relay dropping server msg without Option-82 rx'ed on L2Relay trusted

I've checked and dhcp relay is enabled globally as well as on the interfaces (relay mode & relay trust mode enabled)
