RSPAN on N1548P

Hello,

I've recently purchased 3 N1548P. Each one distributed at different floors and interconnect with fiber connection.

Let's say:
- 1/F: N1548P (1/0/1 connected to IP-PBX; 1/0/2 connected to SPAN destination; all other ports connected to IP Phone; te1/0/1-2 are fiber transceiver to 2/F and 3/F)
- 2/F: N1548P (1/0/1-1/0/48 connected to IP Phone; te1/0/1 connected to 1/F)
- 3/F: N1548P (1/0/1-1/0/48 connected to IP Phone; te1/0/1 connected to 1/F)

Just simple setup there currently:
- RSTP
- all in same VLAN 1

My target configuration is to do port-mirror on 1-3/F IP Phone as SPAN source, and destination is the 1/F N1548P 1/0/2 (it's a IP voice recorder).

I know what I need is RSPAN.
Can anyone give me some advices/sample lines to do this?
Because we have no routing devices between VLANs, so I can only do single VLAN for all voice devices. Is it possible?
The reflector port can reflects same VLAN to destination?

Thanks!

is my X1052P switch bricked?

Hi,

I just unboxed my new Dell X1052P switch. I got into the GUI and first updated the boot code to 1.00.17 rebooted the switch and it was happy. It came right up. Then I loaded firmware 3.00.70 and then selected and rebooted the switch with that firmware. I left it alone for about 20-30 minutes and came back to the activity light flashing green rapidly. Looked it up in the manual and it says that it's booting. So I gave it another 10 minutes and nothing happened. I had no network port lights. So I power cycled it (rookie move maybe..but I needed to keep moving).  Now it powers on the fans spin up completely and the System Locator light is solid blue. I tried plugging in the USB console before I power cycled it and couldn't get anything to come up.

Is there a way to get into the boot loader on this to try to reload the firmware? I can't seem to get the USB interface to work in putty. I installed the USB COM driver and I have an active COM port (COM3) but nothing comes up.

I was hoping to get this switch configured this weekend and for some dumb reason this guy wasn't ordered with ProSupport so I'm waiting until Monday to talk to Basic Support.  Does anyone have any ideas. I can't find the service manual or troubleshooting manual for this guy.

Thanks!

Dell Networking N-Series DNOS 6.3.0.9 required process before upgade.

Last week DNOS 6.3.0.9 was released for the N-series switches. I know everyone reads release notes thoroughly..... But I wanted to raise some awareness to a specific requirement for this firmware.

6.3.0.9 introduces a new version of HiveAgent. If your N-series is currently on a 6.3.0.x revision, please be sure to run the following commands before upgrading.

console#application stop hiveagent
console#delete user-apps/hiveagent
Delete user-apps/hiveagent ? (y/n) y
console#delete user-apps/ah_ha.conf
Delete user-apps/ah_ha.conf ? (y/n) y
console#delete user-apps/ah_ha.conf_s
Delete user-apps/ah_ha.conf_s ? (y/n) y
console#delete user-apps/hiveagent_pr
Delete user-apps/hiveagent_pr ? (y/n) y
console#delete user-apps/hiveagent_pr_s
Delete user-apps/hiveagent_pr_s ? (y/n) y

If the switch is on a 6.2.x.x revision there is no need to run the above commands.

LAG between VRTX 10Gb switch and X-series

$

Hi there,

I am trying to configure a LAG between a VRTX 10Gb switch and an X-series switch (using Dell 10Gb SFP+ cables) - I have tried both X4012 and X1052 but I have the same issue.

When 1 of the 2 SFP+ cables is plugged in, the LAG status is UP but current speed is blank on the VRTX powerconnect and unknown on the X-series. I wanted to try disabling auto negiotation at the LAG level as well as the port level but I dont get an option of 10Gb port speed.

The real issue comes when I plug in the 2nd SFP+ cable. Doing so causes the X-series switch to reboot (sometimes continuously until I perform a config reset).

Any ideas?

RSTP behavior when two S3048-ON configured with VLT and RSTP connected with 5548 with RSTP ?

Hi

I have two S3048-ON configured with VLT and RSTP. I have connected one PowerConnect 5548 to each S3048-ON (1 cable to each, no LACP). The 5548 also have RSTP enabled with a priority of 57344.

One S3048-ON is root bridge (RSTP) with priority 4096 and the other S3048-ON has priority 8192.

The 5548 doesn't receive any BPDUs and therefore sets itself to root bridge.

I've briefly connected the 5548 to another lowend office switch with lower priority than 57344 and the 5548 behaves correctly and set itself to non-root.

I've tried to do a factory reset on all switches and reconfigure, but the result is still that 5548 sets itself as root bridge.

Is there a special behaviour when VLT is configured that is causing RSTP to be isolated from other switches connected to VLT enabled switches ?

Or does the 5548 need to connect with LACP configured for RSTP to work ?

Power connect 5548 won't boot and not cli access.

We have two Powerconnect 5548 used to distribute AV through the office we started to set up the second 5548 and were able to access the cli a couple times after that we have not been able to access the cli and we checked our cables against the other unit and it works fine.  The switch seems to be stuck in location mode and we have no access to the switch in cli.  Seems to me that the boot flash is bad, is there another way to access the 5548 and rewrite the flash back to factory default?

Is the spanning-tree bpdu filtering on the 5548 the same as "spanning-tree portfast bpdufilter default"

It looks to me like the "spanning-tree bpdu filtering" on the 5548 the same as "spanning-tree portfast bpdufilter default" on the N series switches -- is that correct?  If not what is the equivalent command for "spanning-tree portfast bpdufilter default"?

Dell N3000 Series LLDP neighbor ID

$

The N3024, lldp sends the "system ID" or "neighbor ID" as the mac of the switch to my other lldp enabled devices.  Or at least that is what is received.

Can I specify what is sent as the lldp ID or name?

Thanks,

Jeff

powerconnect 8024F and 5524 operating at 100Mbps

We have a situation where it appears that all traffic communicating over our 8024F and 5524 switches is transferring at 100Mbps.

I'm not a networking guy and we outsource our networking to consultants who have not been available to help much, so I'm hoping I can find some guidance here.

Our configuration is as follows:

Two 8024F switches connected to two Equalogic 6010 SANs.
Two 5524F switches connected to the 8024Fs, as well as a Cisco 5520 ASA.
Four Dell R610 servers running VMWare 5.5 these are connected to both the 8024F and the 5524F

The 5524F switches connect to three 100Mb interfaces; one for an EPL to our office from the datacenter, one for internet, and one to backup datacenter.

iSCSI for Dell hosts is directly connected to the 8024F, and the ethernet ports on the Dell servers are connected to the 5524F - ethernet was set up primarly as a backup network.

There are several VLANs; one for iSCSI, one for VMotion, several for segmented data networks, and one for the backup network.  All of the ports on the 5524 are trunked; VLANs are defined on the ASA.

What we're seeing is that throughput to the Equalogics is maxed out to 100Mbps.  I ran a SQL backup this morning and it was only doing 12MB/s which equates to about 96Mbps, and I saw high disk queue length on the server itself and in VMWare.

Monitoring through Solarwinds of the 5524F shows several 1Gbps interfaces all hitting *exactly* 10% utilization.  All of this transmit data; virtually nothing being received.

Oddly, the vSwitch on VMWare for the backup interface (connected to ethernet) shows tons of receive traffic even though the particular host I was monitoring has no guests configured for that network.

Finally, I ran a packet capture on the VMWare host and saw a ton of iSCSI traffic...obviously nothing on that interface accepted the traffic as there is another vSwitch dedicated to iSCSI at 10Gbps.

Our network consultant did suggest that we define all of the 5524 ports for specific VLANs which sounds right.  He looked at the spanning tree configuration and said everything looks good there.

But what I can't understand is why everything seems to be pegged at 100Mbps; none of the 100Mbps show any significant traffic; all of the traffic seems to be over the 1Gbps interfaces.

Thanks for any help you folks can provide!

MLAG N4000 issue

I have 2 stacks of two N4032F (interstack 4x10GE) connected with 4x10GE, mesheh, on to one switch.

Stacks are connected by LACP mode active. This is Core

Some Cisco switches are connected to stack of N4032 with LACP mode active. I issued some communication problems. From Dell stach 1 I can not ping some hosts connected by Dell stack 2.
Some other host are accessable by ping without any problem

Situation changes, after some minutes of ping, communication is lost. Clearing arp on Dell 1 helps for while. There are also some strange communication issues from host to host if communication cross Dell core.

First I switched off additional interfaces in LACP to Cisco leaving only on interface in LACP.. Without any help.

Then I did the same on interstack LACP. When I left only one interface everyting worked perfectly. When I switched on second interface to second member od stack this issue is observed again.

Did anybody have the same problem? Any suggestions.

I have 2 stacks N4032F (interstack links 4x10GE) connected by 4x10GE LACP mode active. This is core. Some Cisco switches are connected to them on LACP 2x10GE

I can not ping some hosts from one side to another. This issue is observed when I test from Dell, but also host to host.

I noticed that if is not pingable ARP adge grows. It looks like not ARP are transfered by LACP. All tested hosts are in the same VLAN. Dell switches have interfaces in that vlan where pinged hosts are. When I added static ARP I can ping. When I remove static after some minuts communication breaks. It is observed only pinging some hosts located on Microsoft HV.

I made some tests. First I closed on of legs on LACK to Cisco switches.

Then I started to test stack1 to stack2 4x10GE link closing links. When I had only one link communications works fine. When I had 2 links do different stack members the problem persist, when I had 2 links connecting each stack member horisontally in seems to be OK.

Does anybody have such problems? How can I solve this issu. I need 4x10 interstack link. I havent test 2x2 horizontaly, because at the moment I can only do it remotely.

Hello,

I need change the MTU to lag members, Can we have a little cut in the VLT when we change the configuration?
The order in the change is important? first the physical ports and next the port-channel?

Thanks a lot.

X-Series DHCP Server settings only allow one DNS server?!

$

Successfully set up our new X4012 switch, including the DHCP server options so that it gives out IP addresses to devices, except for one issue:

Under Network Administration --> DHCP Server --> Edit Network Pool --> Static Host Options

the Domain Name Server field (which the online Help says corresponds to DHCP option 6) only accepts one IP address. All of the specifications I've seen for option 6 (and every other DHCP server I've used) allows multiple IP's. In most systems I've used, they get separated by commas or separate "DNS Server 1," "DNS Server 2" and "DNS Server 3" fields.

I've tried commas, spaces and all sorts of things but the field only accepts a single IP. I also tried to set it via CLI, but the X4012 doesn't seem to allow DHCP configuration via CLI?

Any help would be appreciated. Only accepting one IP eliminates redundancy from a core network service (DNS), not to mention that it makes scheduled (or unscheduled) maintenance on a DNS server into a complication instead of a trivial matter.

Anyone have a solution other than not using the DHCP server feature on the X4012?

Hi, I'm connecting a Cisco UCS to Dell PC 8024 switches. Cisco recommend vPC (virtual port channel) or VLT (Virtual LAN Trunk) for connectivity. Does the Dell PC8024 support VLT? If so, has anyone successfully used it to connect a UCS mini? Thanks
